La Corte a Civita

Corte della Maestà is integral to Civita di Bagnoregio’s breathtaking charm. Look for it behind the church, behind a green gate beneath a bridge of roses.

The charm of a historical residence

In Civita di Bagnoregio, Corte della Maestà occupies the historic spaces of the Episcopal Palace and is home to a collection of art objects we’ve gathered over time from across Italy and the world.
We love sharing the beauty and character of these antique pieces with those who dwell within the Corte, even if only for the span of a journey – because in the baroque opulence of a place as unique and unrepeatable as Corte della Maestà, every antique has a story to tell.

Shared spaces

Corte della Maestà also enchants with its relaxed spirit and the conviviality that infuses the spaces shared between us and our guests. Cucina di Fratta, the vibrant heart of the home, is anchored by a grand dining table beneath three dramatic chandeliers that lend a theatrical flair. The Tana del Lupo, a former Roman cistern, now invites quiet moments of repose—listening to the piano, leafing through a beloved book. The garden of Corte della Maestà, once the site of a Roman villa, now offers a secluded perch overlooking the village’s ancient alleys – a hidden sanctuary of beauty and calm. The garden of

Vescovado, Civita’s largest green space, is wrapped and protected by the ancient walls of the Episcopal Palace. And for couples seeking intimate moments, a private wellness corner is reserved exclusively for two: a cozy area  with sauna and whirlpool bath, available by reservation.

The Rooms

Each room expresses its artistic soul through carefully chosen objects and intricate details that define its unique charm.
The finely carved canopy bed in La Badessa evokes the forlorn love stories of 19th-century novels. The theatrical backdrop adorning the wall of La Sonnambula pays tribute to grand opera. The hand-painted flowers covering every wall of La Scrittrice reflect her wild, untamed spirit. And the quiet intimacy of La Intrusa honours the nostalgic nature of storytelling itself.

The gardens

Two verdant brushstrokes amid the ochre tones of Civita di Bagnoregio.
The gardens of Corte della Maestà are a haven of peace, kissed by breeze and sunlight, sheltered from noise and haste—lush with thriving plants and flowers that delight the eye.

The Relaxation Room

A 40-square-metre haven devoted to exclusive wellness.
Our intimate spa—available by reservation for a maximum of two guests—is a space for rejuvenation, complete with a bio-sauna, a double thermal whirlpool tub, and the option of a soothing massage.
It’s ideal at the end of a long day, or simply for the indulgent pleasure of letting time flow gently by.

The Garden of Corte

The garden of Corte della Maestà is a hidden jewel overlooking the narrow alleys of the village, shielded by the massive walls of San Donato’s apse.
Once the site of a Roman villa, and later a village lane, today it’s a private garden offering the rare thrill of being in the very heart of Civita di Bagnoregio.
Its intimacy and beauty are preserved by Mediterranean plants growing between the remnants of Roman columns, and enhanced by splendid water lilies swaying in a 17th-century marble basin.
It’s the perfect setting for a leisurely breakfast, enriched by the vibrant colours and fragrances of seasonal blooms.

The Vescovado Garden

Civita’s largest private garden reveals itself only once you’ve entered the house and passed through the kitchen—a crescendo of wonder and surprise.
During the warmer months, beneath the shade of a large fig tree and a scattering of fruit trees, guests can find breakfast elegantly served—or simply settle in to enjoy the dolce far niente, surrounded by roses and hydrangeas and serenaded by the many birds who’ve chosen this haven as their home.

La Tana del Lupo

Just a few steps down from the kitchen lies La Tana del Lupo—a spacious 50-square-metre lounge carved out of an ancient Roman cistern, with soaring tuff-stone arches and a majestic stone fireplace. Comfortable sofas and an old Forneris piano make it the perfect place to enjoy music, unwind with a film on the large screen, or sink into the pleasure of a good book, handpicked from our small library.

La Cucina di Fratta

Everything converges in La Cucina di Fratta, named after The Confessions of an Italian by Ippolito Nievo—the beating heart of the house. It’s a space that seems to change character with the light of the day, a symphony of form and colour that stretches from one garden to the other. Its charm is truly unmatched.
Here, our guests enjoy rich breakfasts prepared with care, and, amid warm conversation and a gentle pat from our two loyal Labradors, they ask us for tips on the unmissable landscapes nearby, the hidden treasures of Civita, or the culinary delights of Tuscia that simply must be tried.
